Sorry to hear that your forum didn't work despite your best efforts. Sometimes your audience aren't loyal or very active so it can make them very hard to get involved in the long term. Hopefully this hasn't affected your plans longer term. Perhaps you could look to contriubte to others to help spread your word instead?

Good comments! I thing you are bang on with the point of 'core' users that act as a magnet for others to be attracted to. A friend and I started a forum on fishing and, although we have attracted 61 users in about 6 months, what started off as a promising post set dwindled. This was despite lots of promotion etc. I guess it comes down to physcology. Folks want to be part of a winning formulae, but don't want to drive it. Sadly, looks like we'll be killing the forum soon.

In my experience, intellectual matter forums aren't exactly drawing crowds but if you launch a forum about a popular TV show with lots of drama, it much easier to launch and grow.
